The Brief:
SPS were engaged to post produce a new comedy series starring Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. We worked closely with Sky Entertainment’s scripted team and Tiger Aspect Productions to do this. The producers, who pictured the comedy action series as a thriller, high in VFX content, had a clear vision for their production. They wanted the show to be both iconic and stylish. Filmic references were given as a style guide and commercial music as the foundation for the soundtrack.

The Solution:
We created a bespoke workflow in close conversation with production. To create a cinematic feel, location footage was shot on an Arri Alexa Mini recorded at 1080 25p in a 2.1 aspect ratio. Each day, the location DIT supplied SPS with a Pro Res 4444 file of the rushes, along with DNxHD36 proxy media with satellite audio for daily overnight ingest, syncing and grouping. The dedicated edit assistant, workflow supervisor and post producer consistently managed the incoming material.

Precision project management and a watertight workflow were essential for the collaborative post production effort. The edit was facilitated at Sky, the offline in Avid MC 8.9.2, the online on Avid Symphony with Baselight plug in and Adobe Creative Cloud. We worked in tandem with Tiger Aspect and their external partners for VFX, and the colourist and grade team in Manchester.

The sound design and mix were created in our ProTools, Dolby-certified theatre. Our sound team were across all elements of the audio workflow including tracklay, dialogue, music & effects editing and ADR record. Foley was recorded to ensure a fully filled mix was available for international delivery. The final sound design and audio mix brought the series to life, fulfilling production’s brief.

The 6 x 30 mins series in HD with 5.1 mix was delivered to Sky One and Sky Studios for broadcast from February 2020.
