What is the MSO role?

MSOs work across various roles, adapting as needed to support live sports, entertainment, and corporate event productions. Whether managing the production floor or handling critical equipment, MSOs ensure that each broadcast is smooth and well-coordinated. Acting as a central communication point, MSOs help maintain synchronisation among directors, talent and crew, keeping everyone aligned and ready to go live.

Beyond floor management, MSOs perform regular equipment checks—ensuring microphones, earpieces, and other essential devices meet technical and accessibility standards. Safety is always front-of-mind, as MSOs ensure a safe working environment for everyone on set. What does an MSO do?

  • Operate Robotic Cameras & Lighting Systems: Simultaneously manage robotic cameras and the lighting control system, delivering high-quality visuals. Ensure all equipment is set up and functioning correctly.
  • Studio Floor Management: Act as the central communication hub between the crew, directors, presenters and guests. Use the talkback system to relay instructions.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct regular checks on microphones, earpieces and other equipment, addressing any issues promptly and maintaining accessibility requirements.
  • Program Schedule Review: Anticipate changes and adapt to diverse needs by proactively reviewing the program schedule, demonstrating flexibility and problem-solving skills.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Address equipment and control system failures, escalating issues to relevant parties when necessary.
  • Reporting & Housekeeping: Provide comprehensive reports to the Operations Support Manager, highlight outcomes and lessons learned, and maintain housekeeping practices.
  • Health & Safety: Promote a safe working environment by adhering to current Health and Safety guidelines and encouraging good practices.
